Carrara is located on the south bank of the Nerang River and is a suburb of the city of Gold Coast, Queensland. It was settled as a cotton plantation in the beginning of the 1860s by the Manchester Cotton Company. It got its name from the aboriginal word ‘karara’ meaning ‘long flat’.

Having moved past its cotton plantation days, Carrara is now known for its sports facilities. This is where the Carrara Stadium, also known as the Metricon Stadium, is located. The area also has five golf courses. In fact, the proposed Carrara Sports Precinct will be the main location for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
